제16회 광주 비엔날레 카사와비 파빌리온
100여 년 된 한옥에 황금비가 지나간 뒤의 풍경이 펼쳐진다.
제16회 광주비엔날레 카사 와비 파빌리온(Casa Wabi Pavilion)은 멕시코 현대미술가 보스코 소디(Bosco Sodi)의 개인전 《황금비(Gold Rain)》를 선보인다. (재)광주비엔날레와 카사 와비 재단(Fundación Casa Wabi)이 주관하고 조현화랑이 공식 협력하는 이번 전시는 광주광역시 민속문화유산 제1호 ‘이장우 가옥’에서 9월 5일(토)부터 11월 15일(일)까지 열린다.
멕시코 출신의 현대미술가 보스코 소디는 미국을 비롯해 멕시코, 독일, 일본 등 세계 각지에서 활동하며, 풍부한 질감과 강렬한 색채를 지닌 회화와 조각, 설치 작업을 통해 독창적인 작품 세계를 구축해 왔다. 건축을 살아 있는 신체처럼 바라보며 그 경계를 탐구하고, 대지의 흙으로 표면을 물들이는 작품 세계를 선보여왔다. 소디의 작품은 일본 이시카와현립미술관, 미국 하버드 미술관, 벨기에 앤트워프 현대미술관, 네덜란드 보르린던 박물관, 호주 빅토리아 국립미술관 등 세계 주요 미술 기관 및 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다.
소디는 창작 활동을 넘어 예술을 지역과 공동체가 만나는 플랫폼으로 확장해 왔다. 그가 설립을 주도한 카사 와비 재단(Fundación Casa Wabi)은 예술가 레지던시, 전시, 커뮤니티 프로그램 등을 통해 예술과 지역사회를 연결하고 있다. 특히 멕시코 푸에르토 에스콘디도에 위치한 카사 와비 본부 공간은 세계적인 건축가 안도 다다오(Tadao Ando)가 설계했다.
작가는 이번 전시를 위해 서로 다른 크기와 형태, 무게와 존재감을 지닌 화산석 400여 점을 선별하고, 22캐럿 금을 입혀 690℃ 고온에서 구워낸다. 이 과정에서 화산석 본연의 형태와 성질은 그대로 남고 표면에는 금빛의 새로운 층위가 더해진다. 소디에게 금은 돌의 본질을 바꾸기 위한 대상이 아니라, 소박한 대상을 신성한 무언가로 바꿔놓는 매개이다.
이러한 변화는 개별 작업에서 공간의 변화로 이어진다. 가옥 내부와 정원, 안뜰에 놓인 돌은 마치 오래전부터 그곳에 있던 것처럼 공간과 어우러지며 존재감을 드러낸다. 응축된 화산석 덩어리와 균열이 있는 표면, 금빛으로 빛나는 돌은 마치 하늘에서 떨어진 물질처럼 공간에 자리한다. 각각의 돌은 태양의 움직임에 따라 빛을 반사하는 방식이 달라지며 공간에 미묘하면서도 강렬한 변화의 리듬을 만든다. 관람객은 작품을 바라보는 데 그치지 않고, 가옥 내부와 정원, 안뜰을 직접 거닐며 마치 황금비가 지나간 직후의 현장에 들어선 듯한 경험을 하게 된다.
작가는 “이장우 가옥을 보는 순간 매료되었습니다. 건축과 역사, 스며드는 빛, 공간이 품은 분위기만으로 아름다운 곳이기에 존재하는 아름다움을 더욱 드러내는 개입이 가장 적절하고 존중하는 방식이라고 생각했습니다”라며 "제게 예술은 평범한 것이 신성하게 보이는 순간 시작됩니다. 단순한 돌 하나도 우리가 바라보는 방식에 따라 완전히 달라질 수 있다면, 우리의 삶 또한 같은 방식으로 변화할 수 있다고 믿습니다"라고 이번 작업에 대한 생각을 전했다.
이번 전시는 ‘황금비’를 덕을 인정받고 윤리적 균형이 회복될 때 나타나는 천상의 은총으로 바라본다.
큐레이터 마르첼로 단타스(Marcello Dantas)는 이번 전시가 광주에서 오래전부터 이어져 온 대화를 오늘의 시간 속에서 다시 잇는 일이라고 설명했다. 그는 “한옥은 마당을 중심으로 이루어진 건축이다. 집의 중심은 하늘을 받아들이기 위해 비워져 있고, 처마는 빗물을 모아 다시 땅으로 돌려보낸다. 이장우 가옥이 자리한 양림동 역시 서로 다른 문화가 만나고 스며들며 새로운 풍경을 만들어 온 경계의 장소이다. 멕시코 출신의 아티스트 소디의 작업을 이곳에서 선보이는 것은 이 동네가 오래전부터 이어온 대화를 오늘의 시간 속에서 다시 이어가는 일”이라고 말했다.
이 전시는 제16회 광주비엔날레 주제인 '너는 네 삶을 바꾸어야 한다'와도 연결된다. 단타스는 “황금은 풍요를 가져오기 위해 내리는 것이 아니라, 이미 변화한 결과로 내려온다는 의미입니다. 광주는 역사적 사건으로 깊이 각인되었다가 다시 생명력을 회복한 도시입니다. 그 두 시간은 지금도 공존합니다. 이 전시는 그러한 광주 위에 평범한 돌이 금으로 변하는 순간을 놓습니다”라고 전했다.
A “gold rain” descends upon a century-old hanok.
The Casa Wabi Pavilion at the 16th Gwangju Biennale presents Gold Rain, a solo exhibition by Mexican contemporary artist Bosco Sodi. Organized by the Gwangju Biennale Foundation and Fundación Casa Wabi, in official collaboration with Johyun Gallery, the exhibition will take place at Lee Jang-woo’s House, designated Gwangju Metropolitan City Folk Cultural Heritage No. 1, from September 5 to November 15, 2026.
Mexican contemporary artist Bosco Sodi has developed a distinctive body of work through paintings, sculptures, and installations characterized by rich textures and intense colors. Active internationally across the United States, Mexico, Germany, Japan, and beyond, Sodi approaches architecture as a living body, exploring its boundaries while creating surfaces imbued with earth and other natural materials. His works are held in major museum and institutional collections worldwide, including the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art in Japan, Harvard Art Museums in the United States, the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (M HKA) in Belgium, Museum Voorlinden in the Netherlands, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia.
Beyond his own artistic practice, Sodi has expanded his engagement with art by creating a platform for encounters between artists and local communities. Fundación Casa Wabi, which he founded, connects art with surrounding communities through artist residencies, exhibitions, and community programs. Its main site in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, was designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando.
For this exhibition, Sodi has selected approximately 400 volcanic stones, each differing in size, form, weight, and physical presence. The stones are glazed with 22-karat gold and fired at 690°C. Through this process, their original forms and material qualities remain intact, while a new golden layer is added to their surfaces. For Sodi, gold is not a means of altering the essential nature of the stone, but rather a medium through which a humble object is transformed into something sacred.
This transformation extends from the individual works to the space itself. Placed throughout the interior of the house, the garden, and the courtyard, the stones blend into their surroundings as though they had always been there, while asserting a distinct presence. Dense volcanic stones, with cracked surfaces gleaming in gold, settle into the space like matter fallen from the sky. Each stone reflects light differently as the sun moves, creating a subtle yet powerful rhythm of change throughout the space. Rather than simply viewing the works, visitors walk through the interior of the house, the garden, and the courtyard, experiencing the space as though they had stepped into the aftermath of a gold rain.
The artist shared his thoughts on the work: “I was captivated the moment I saw Lee Jang-woo’s House. The architecture and history, the light filtering through, and the atmosphere held within the space make it beautiful in itself, so I felt that an intervention that further reveals the beauty already present would be the most appropriate and respectful approach.” He continued, “For me, art begins at the moment when the ordinary appears sacred. If even a simple stone can become something entirely different depending on the way we look at it, I believe our lives can also be transformed in the same way.”
This exhibition regards “gold rain” as a form of heavenly grace that appears when virtue is recognized and ethical balance is restored.
Curator Marcello Dantas explained that the exhibition is an act of reconnecting, in the present, a dialogue that has long continued in Gwangju. He said, “Hanok architecture is organized around a courtyard. The center of the house is left open to receive the sky, while the eaves gather rainwater and return it to the earth. Yangnim-dong, where Lee Jang-woo House is located, is also a place of thresholds, where different cultures have met, permeated one another, and created new landscapes. Presenting the work of Mexican artist Sodi here is a way of continuing, in the present, a dialogue that this neighbourhood has sustained for a long time.”
The exhibition also connects with the theme of the 16th Gwangju Biennale, You Must Change Your Life. Dantas stated, “Gold does not fall to bring abundance; rather, it falls as the result of a transformation that has already taken place. Gwangju is a city that was deeply marked by historical events and then regained its vitality. Those two temporalities still coexist today. Against this backdrop, the exhibition presents the moment when an ordinary stone is transformed into gold.”
