Lee Kwang-Ho

Lee Kwang-Ho studied painting at Seoul National University and continued his graduate studies there, balancing classical painting techniques with contemporary experimentation. He has consistently explored the boundaries between sensation, perception, and narrative through the traditional medium of painting. Lee’s works incorporate the visual language of photography and cinema, culminating in distinctive pictorial grammar. In 2006, he was nominated as a finalist for the Castellón International Painting Prize in Spain, which supported progressive tendencies in contemporary painting and intermedia experimentation. The same year, he presented the project 《Inter-View》 at the Changdong Art Studio in Seoul, a body of work combining interviews, photography, and painting, visually documented personal memory and social identity, expanding the potential of the painting medium. In his subsequent works featuring cacti, deserts, nightscapes, and wetlands, Lee has continued to investigate spatial perception and sensory flow. In his recent 《Blow-up》(2023–) project, inspired by the wetlands of New Zealand, he recomposes fragments of place and the flow of gaze across divided canvases, developing a tactile and spatial reflection in painting.

Lee has held solo exhibitions in various venues, including Johyun Gallery, Busan, South Korea; Kukje Gallery, Seoul, South Korea; and Changdong Studio Gallery, Seoul, South Korea; and has participated in group exhibitions at Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea; Busan Museum of Art, Busan, South Korea; Gana Art Center, Seoul, South Korea; and Saatchi Gallery, London, United Kingdom. His works are included in prestigious collections including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul, South Korea; Leeum Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea; Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea; and Deji Art Museum, Nanjing, China.

이광호는 회화의 전통적 매체성과 현대적 감각을 넘나들며 감각, 지각, 서사의 경계를 꾸준히 탐구해 왔다. 서울대학교 회화과와 동 대학원에서 수학하며 고전 회화 연구와 동시대적 실험을 병행했으며, 영화와 사진의 언어를 흡수한 감각적인 화면을 통해 독자적인 조형 언어를 구축했다. 2006년에는 현대 회화의 진보적 경향과 매체 간의 실험을 지지하는 카스텔론(Castellón) 국제회화 공모전(스페인)에서 후보자로 선정되었다. 같은 해 서울 창동레지던시에서 발표한 《Inter-View》 프로젝트는 인터뷰, 촬영, 회화를 결합한 작업으로, 개인의 기억과 사회적 정체성을 시각적으로 기록하며 회화 매체의 지평을 넓혔다. 이후 그는 선인장, 곶자왈, 사막, 야경, 습지 등 자연의 이미지를 통해 감각의 흐름과 지각의 층위를 탐색하며 회화적 공간을 실험해왔다. 특히 《Blow-Up》(2023~) 프로젝트에서는 뉴질랜드 습지를 분할된 캔버스로 구성하여 시선의 흐름과 장소성의 파편을 재조합하고, 촉지적 감각과 공간에 대한 사유를 회화로 전개하고있다.

그는 조현갤러리 부산, 국제갤러리 서울, 창동 스튜디오 갤러리 서울 등 다양한 장소에서 개인전을 개최하였고, 서울시립미술관 서울, 부산시립미술관 부산, 가나아트센터 서울, 사치 갤러리 런던에서 그룹전에 참여하였다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 리움미술관, 서울시립미술관, 난징 데지미술관 등 국내외 주요기관에 소장되어 있다.
