Born in Paris in 1947, Rousse is internationally recognized for his photographs taken at the boundary of documentary architectural photos and photos of staged space that stimulate visual imagination about a specific place. For the med school graduate, photography was a passionate hobby since childhood and also a way of making a living outside the walls of a hospital. From the early 1980s, Rousse started painting on walls and floors of the disused buildings, and took photos of them; these were interesting results coming from the clashes and cross-overs of pictorial point of view and photographic point of view.
If photographic images turn a three-dimensional space into a two-dimensional level, Georges Rousse works backwards; he imagines the 2D image that will be captured by the camera and then materializes in situ that very form by means of color, line and/or construction. With his astounding sense of space, he creates in the empty space a virtual reality which provides a new way of looking at a place and it’s space, up and over the contemporary use of the “anamorphosis”, an old technique of optical illusion.
Inspiration, for Rousse, comes from the place itself which explains his global travel to meet a new space; he has realized numerous site-specific projects in Europe, North America, Japan, Nepal and also in Seoul (2000). The exhibitions in Johyun Gallery unveil Rousse’s various images and working methods over the last fifteen years. A new work will be created at Busan, in an annex of the Gallery.
The artist describes his works as “another way to occupy the place” and “a way to sublimate space which will soon disappear and be forgotten.” Georges Rousse’s works fascinate us with their photographic qualities in framing, lighting, depth of space, precision and the sheer large-scale image. However once we are informed about the way these are created, we encounter wonderful experiences of a visual promenade between the plane and the volume, between the reality and illusions, discovering the spirit of the places.
Since early 1980s, Georges Rousse has actively exhibited across the world and he has been invited in the Paris Biennial (1982), the Sidney Biennial (1984) and the Venice Biennial (1988). In 2008, the European House for Photoraphy in Paris held his grand restrospective. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Villa Medici Residencies (1983, 1985-1987), the Prix ICP, New York (1989) and the French National Grand Prix of Photography (1993). His works are held in the collection of important institutions like the MOMA, New York; the Brooklyne Museum; the Menil collection, Houston; the National Library, Paris; the National Museum of Modern Art, Pompidou Center, Paris; the Louvre Museum, Paris; the Museum of Modern Art, Wien; the Miro Foundation, Barcelona; the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photogrpahy etc.
부산 조현화랑은 9월 5일부터 10월 15일까지 프랑스 사진 작가 죠르쥬 루쓰의 초대전을 엽니다.
서울 조현화랑 전시(7.25-8.27)에서 보여진 13점의 작품 외에 2점의 현장 설치 작업과 1점의 현지 제작 사진이 추가 전시됩니다. 작가가 8월23일부터 부산에 체류하며 제작한 현장 설치 작업은 루쓰의 작업 방식과 세계에 대한 이해를 도모할 것이며, 신작을 프로덕션한다는 점에 의미를 두고 추진되었습니다.
죠르쥬 루쓰는 기록적 건축 사진과 연출된 공간 사진의 경계에서 특정 장소에 대한 시각적 상상을 자극하는 작품으로 현대 사진의 다양한 전개에 기여한 국제적인 작가입니다. 의학을 공부한 그에게 사진은 어린 시절부터의 열정적 취미였으며, 직업 사진사로 활동하기도 했습니다. 1980년 초반부터 사용하지 않는 건물들을 찾아 벽과 바닥에 자유롭게 그림을 그리고 사진을 찍기 시작했으며 곧 회화적 시점과 사진적 시점의 충돌과 교차가 만들어내는 흥미로운 결과를 극대화하는 방향으로 작업을 전개했습니다.
사진 이미지가 본질적으로 3차원 공간을 2차원 평면으로 전환하여 보여 준다면, 루쓰는 사진에서 평면으로 보여질 형태를 공간 속에 유추하여 만들고 그립니다. 놀라운 공간 지각력을 가진 그가 가상 현실로 존재하게 하는 색면과 드로잉, 구축된 입체들은 “아나모르포즈”라고 불리는 착시 테크닉의 현대적 구사를 넘어서 장소와 공간을 새롭게 바라보는 방식이 됩니다.
루쓰에게 영감의 원천은 장소와 공간 그 자체이기 때문에, 그는 새로운 공간을 찾아서 전 세계를 여행합니다. 유럽 여러 나라는 물론 북미, 일본, 네팔 등지에서 작업을 했으며, 한국에서는 2000년도 서울 프로젝트에 이어서 이번 부산 조현화랑 전시에서 두 개의 새 작업을 했습니다. 화랑 입구와 부속 공간에 설치된 작업은 현실과 비현실의 경계를 넘나드는 흥미로운 시각 경험의 기회를 제공할 것입니다. 화랑 내에 전시된 총 14점의 사진 작품은 1990년대 중반 이후 루쓰의 다양한 작업 방식을 보여줍니다. 그의 사진들은 프레임과 구도, 빛, 공간의 깊이, 정밀성, 대형 사이즈 등 사진적 특성들로 우리를 매혹하지만, 그의 작업 과정을 알 때, 우리의 시선은 작품 속 장소를 상상으로 산책하며 평면과 입체, 시각과 환영의 영역을 오가는 흥미로운 경험을 하게 됩니다.
1947년 프랑스 파리 출생인 죠르쥬 루쓰는 1980년대 초반부터 왕성한 전시 활동을 해왔으며 파리 비엔날레(1982), 시드니 비엔날레(1984), 베니스 비엔날레(1988) 등에 초대되었습니다. 2008년 파리 유럽사진의 집에서 대대적인 회고전을 가졌으며 프랑스 문화성의 빌라 메디치 장학금(1983, 1985-1987), 뉴욕의 현대사진 인스티튜트상(1989), 프랑스 사진 그랑 프리(1993) 등을 수상했습니다. 그의 작품은 뉴욕 구겐하임 미술관, 뉴욕 브룩클린 미술관, 휴스톤 메닐 컬렉션, 프랑스 국립 도서관, 파리 퐁피두 센타 국립 현대미술관, 파리 루브르 박물관, 비엔나 현대미술관, 바르셀로나 미로 재단, 동경 시립 사진 미술관, 서울 대림미술관 등에 소장되어 있습니다.
또한 뉴욕 타임즈로 부터 의뢰 받아 제작한 그의 작품은 2008년 9월7일 자 “뉴욕타임즈 리뷰”의 표지작으로 실리며 그에 관한 인터뷰와 기사가 예정되어 있습니다.
