En attendant:

A solo exhibition by Lee Bae, En attendant: Waiting, will be presented at Museum SAN. Centered on the artist’s more than three-decade engagement with charcoal since relocating to France in 1989, the exhibition offers an in-depth exploration of the interwoven relationships between nature and humanity, time and existence. Spanning six distinct spaces—from the museum’s main entrance through the gallery lobby and Cheongjo Galleries 1, 2, and 3, and extending to the outdoor Space of Nothingness—the exhibition brings together the artist’s full body of work, including paintings, sculptures, installations, and video.

The exhibition title En attendant: Waiting signifies a temporality that remains open toward the future in an unfinished state—an interval before transformation, a moment of becoming. The process of creating charcoal embodies a time of waiting. Just as wood burns in the kiln and, over an extended period, is transformed into charcoal, the endurance of waiting between creation and dissolution forms a central conceptual axis in Lee Bae’s practice.
