Jisan Ahn’s painting questions the factuality of media images. He begins by collecting images from the media, then processes them in various forms such as drawings, collages, miniatures, before finally applying oil paint to the canvas. His depiction of objects in specific settings is strangely distorted and accentuated by the material properties. Ahn mounts thick, expressive layers of paint onto the canvas, emphasizing the physical versus the virtual world and the real versus the unreal. Ahn intends to express the raw visual state and absorbed emotions of the subject, realized through experienced and penetrated emotions. Instead of portraying the subject through obvious imagery, Ahn expresses the reality and emotional experience of the subject through intuition and empathy.
Ahn Jisan has had solo exhibitions in various venues, including solo exhibitions at Arario Gallery, Seoul; Galerie Bart, Amsterdam; Zaha Museum, Seoul and Hapjungjigu, Seoul. He has also participated in group exhibitions at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul; Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Ansan; Savina Museum, Seoul; Kunsthalle Münster, Münster; Daegu Art Museum, Daegu; ARKO Art Center, Seoul; and Gallery LUMC, Leiden. He participated in a residency at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 2013 - 2014 and was awarded the “Buning Brongers Prijzen” in 2014.
안지산 작가는 실험적인 태도와 폭넓은 상상력으로 한국 현대미술의 새로운 패러다임을 개척 중인 페인터이다. 그는 현재 인간이 직면한 가장 근본적인 문제이자, 철학적 주제인 삶과 죽음의 경계에 대해 끝없이 연구 중이다. 그의 작업 방식은 어떠한 대상, 현상들에 대해 작가 스스로 재해석하고, 이를 자신의 작업실에서 ʻ재현’, ʻ연출’이라는 과정인 "내러티브 콜라주"를 거친다. 이러한 과정을 통해 작가는 본사건의 주인공 또는 목격자가 되어 다양한 시점에서 페인팅 작업을 한다. 작가에게 작업실은 회화적 상상을 불러일으키는 근원지이자 생산지이다. 이곳에서 그는 심리, 기억, 경험, 트라우마의 세계 사이에서 회화라는 자신만의 무대의 연출가가 된다. 즉, 작가의 재해석을 통해 또 다른 내용과 시간을 덧입히고 극적인 상황으로 연출하는 것이다. 작품을 통해 보이는 현장 속에 자신의 모습을 대입하기도, 매우 먼 거리에서 바라본 현장의 모습을 마치 목격자 입장에서 묘사하기도 한다. 작가는 거친 표현을 위해 붓, 나이프뿐만 아니라,손에 잡히는 것들(비닐, 장갑, 노끈, 손, 나뭇가지 등등...)을 사용하는 데 주저함이 없고 어설픔에 신경 쓰지않는다.
