Johyun Gallery presents Lee Bae and Kim Taek Sang at Frieze London, in a dialogue between the fundamental elements of fire and water. Both artists trace the luminosity that emerges from these forces, each through a distinct approach and methodology. Lee Bae employs charcoal-born from fire-as a medium to register the fragments and afterglow of light, translating its energy into gestures of painting. His works capture the tension generated by the encounter between the density of charcoal and the motion of the brush, evoking the instant when matter releases its own light. Kim Taek Sang layers water, pigment, and light through repeated acts on canvas to reveal moments when light breathes within the flow of nature and time. His paintings, with minimal human intervention, open into spaces where matter discloses its own rhythms through traces and contingencies it produces. Through the transformation and circulation of matter, both artists reflect on the traces of light that appear between extinction and creation. This presentation extends the aesthetics and experimental spirit of Korean abstract painting, articulating renewed sensibilities of nature, material, and time.
