Khairulddin Wahab

Khairulddin Wahab is a Singaporean artist who explores new ways of seeing nature and the environment through organic patterning, multilayered surfaces, and nonlinear spatial compositions. His practice unfolds along two interrelated axes: a painterly inquiry into the environmental history of Southeast Asia; and a critical reexamination of the visual frameworks inherited from colonialism. The landscapes that emerge in his paintings are places where the history of Southeast Asia, its ecological transformations, and the marks of human intervention converge and accumulate. Through them, Wahab reconsiders how land and nature have been perceived and governed under colonial expansion, maritime trade networks, and the economic systems they engendered.
For Wahab, the process of making is itself the essential language of the work, taking precedence over the representation of any given image. He understands the painted surface as a site where time, labor, and material gather and settle, and draws inspiration from traditional modes of production across Southeast Asia, he builds up a richly stratified surface structure on the canvas.  By deliberately juxtaposing dense overlays of pigment with negative space, he visually records spectral narratives. These material procedures serve as a vital means of rendering visible the accumulated layers of natural environment and historical time.

Wahab first drew international attention upon receiving the 2018 UOB Painting of the Year award. He studied fine arts at LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore, and has participated in major international art events including Art SG, Asia NOW Paris, Abu Dhabi Art, and Biennale Jogja, and presented the large-scale installation The Lands Below the Winds (2024) in the PLATFORM section of Art SG 2025.
Wahab's works are held in the collections of the Singapore Art Museum, Kadist Art Foundation (Paris), Fondation Thalie (Belgium), X Museum (Beijing), and Salsali Private Museum (Dubai).

카이룰딘 와합은 유기적인 패턴과 다층적 레이어, 비선형적 공간 구성을 통해 자연과 환경을 바라보는 새로운 시각 체계를 탐구하는 싱가포르 작가이다. 그의 작업은 동남아시아 환경사에 대한 회화적 탐구, 식민주의적 시각 구조에 대한 비판적 접근이라는 두 축을 중심으로 전개된다. 작가의 회화 속 풍경은 동남아시아의 역사와 환경 변화, 인간의 개입이 중첩된 장소로 나타난다. 이를 통해 그는 식민주의 확장과 해상 교역 네트워크, 그리고 경제 시스템 속에서 땅과 자연이 어떻게 인식되고 통제되어 왔는지를 재고한다. 카이룰딘 와합은 이미지의 재현보다 제작 과정 자체를 작업의 핵심 언어로 삼는다. 카이룰딘 와합에게 회화의 표면은 시간과 노동, 물질이 축적되는 장소다. 그는 동남아시아의 전통적인 염색 기법 바틱(batik)을 체화하여 다층적인 표면 구조를 형성한다. 잔존하는 이미지들은 물감의 밀집과 여백을 통해 기록된다. 이러한 과정은 자연 환경과 역사적 시간의 축적을 시각적으로 드러내는 중요한 장치로 작동한다.
