[2025 Tokyo Gendai] Lee So Yeun

Lee So Yeun translates her self-image, memories, and experiences into a visual language, engaging in an inquiry into the fluid boundaries between sameness and otherness, intimacy and estrangement. Her practice, marked by a subtle theatricality and an uncanny sense of familiarity, aligns with the lineage of Pop Art, which reflects fragments of everyday life, while simultaneously integrating surrealist elements that provoke the imagination. At first glance, her works may appear ordinary, yet upon closer examination, they reveal an underlying dissonance, eliciting emotions of oppression, fear, nostalgia, and desire. This affective resonance emerges from the gaps created by unfamiliar juxtapositions, allowing for the projection of individual longing. In contrast to Western artists who often emphasize distance and alienation, Lee’s work explores the process of merging with the object of desire. Through self-portraiture seamlessly integrated into her compositions, she captures ephemeral moments where the internal and external converge, articulated through bold forms and luminous hues.

Lee So Yeun majored in fine art in South Korea and continued her studies at the Münster Kunst Academy in Germany. Her nomination for Düsseldorf's "Emprise Art Prize" catalysed her recognition within the German art sector. By 2005, she earned the "Young Artist Award" from the Columbus Art Foundation in Ravensburg, Germany. From 2006, she collaborated exclusively with Düsseldorf's esteemed Conrad Gallery, achieving international acclaim at renowned art fairs including the Cologne Art Colony in Germany, Show Off in Paris, France, ARCO in Madrid, Spain, and Scope and Pulse Art Fairs in New York, United States. She has showcased solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Essen, Germany (2014), Johyun Gallery, South Korea (2014), and Space K, South Korea (2013). She also participated in notable group exhibitions at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, South Korea (2018), Sejong Centre, South Korea (2017), Amway Museum, South Korea (2016), Pohang Museum of Steel Art, South Korea (2015), and Gallery Lux, South Korea (2015). Currently, her works are part of collections at TCB collection in Japan, Achenbach Art Consulting in Germany, the Columbus Foundation, and t.VIS.t Communication in Madrid, Spain.

李素蓮は、自身の姿や周囲の記憶・経験を絵画的言語で解きほぐしながら、同質性と異質性、親密さと違和感の流動的な境界を探求してきた。微妙な演劇的雰囲気と、見慣れた中に潜む奇妙な親密さを醸し出す彼女の作品世界は、日常生活の断面を扱ったポップアートの系譜とつながりながらも、想像力を刺激する異質な要素を融合させ、シュルレアリスムの潮流をも継承している。

一見平凡に見えるが、注視するほどに奇妙さが立ち現れ、鑑賞者に抑圧や恐れ、郷愁といった感情を喚起させる。それは、見慣れぬ組み合わせが生み出す「ズレ」の中に、誰もが自らの欲望を投影し得るからだろう。西洋の作家たちが他者との距離や疎外を強調するのに対し、李素蓮は欲望の対象と一体となる過程に注目し、背景と調和しながら染み込む自画像のイメージを通して、内面と外面が交差する感覚的瞬間を、断固たるフォルムと明快な色彩で捉えている。

1971年生まれの李素蓮は、韓国で西洋画を専攻した後、ドイツ・ミュンスター芸術アカデミーで学びを続ける中、デュッセルドルフのNRWフォーラムが主催するエンプライズ美術賞の候補に選出された。この機会を通じてドイツ美術界において早くから注目を集め、2005年にはラーベンスブルクのコロンブス芸術財団とつながり「ヤング・アーティスト賞」を受賞した。

2006年より、歴史あるデュッセルドルフのコンラッド・ギャラリーと専属契約を結び、数多くの国際的なアートフェアにて作品の評価を確立した。これまでクンストハウス・エッセン、ジョヒョン・ギャラリー、スペースKにて個展を開催し、京畿道美術館、セジョン文化会館、アムウェイ美術館、浦項市立美術館、ギャラリーLUXなどの主要なグループ展にも参加している。

現在、彼女の作品は、東京のCBコレクション、ドイツ・アーヘンバッハ・アートコンサルティング、コロンブス芸術財団、スペイン・マドリードのt.VIS.tコミュニケーションなどに収蔵されている。
