In December 2010, celebrating the end of the year, Johyun Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Park Seo-Bo.
Leading the avant-garde movement after the liberation of Korea in 1945, Park Seo-bo has been the most important figure respected as the pioneer of modern art in Korea. Following the years of 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2006, Johyun Gallery Busan is presenting another solo exhibition of Park Seo-Bo in the means to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Johyun Gallery and also the sixtieth anniversary of Park’s career as an artist.
In the exhibition, new works of ‘Ecriture’, the series Park has been continuously expanding since its beginning in 1960s, are introduced. In French, écriture means ‘writing’. As the title suggests, ‘Ecriture’ is a product of drawing a line as if one were writing. The artist compares the act of drawing lines repeatedly with a pencil on a canvas to an act of emptying one’s self as a Buddhist chants its prayer. This work of contemplation becomes more subtle and intricate as Park began to use Korean hanji paper in 1980s. The process of wetting layers of hanji placed on a canvas using gel medium and then drawing lines with a thick pencil or his fingers requires time and persistence just as one meditates.
To the person who has been working over fourteen hours everyday for more than half a century, this poetic work of silence is a battle. The reason Park is considered as the power of Korean art in his age of eighty is because of his endless passion and demand for challenge. In December 2010, as to welcome the end of the year, Johyun Gallery cordially invites you to follow the footsteps of a living master of modern art, Park Seo-Bo, through his ever-stopping creativity that has started sixty years ago.
2010년 12월, 연말을 맞이하여 조현화랑은박서보展을 개최한다.
박서보는 해방 이후 전위 미술 운동을 이끌며, 오늘날까지 한국 현대미술의 선두 주자로 존경 받는 한국미술계의 가장 중요한 작가이다. 1996년, 1999년, 2002년, 2006년에 이어 조현화랑 부산에서 선보이는 2010년 박서보 개인전은 조현화랑 20주년 및 박서보 60년 화업을 기념하는 의미로 마련되었다.
이번 초대전에서는 작가가 1960년대부터 일관성 있게 심화해온 ‘묘법(描法),Ecriture’의 최신 작품을 만나 볼 수 있다. 묘법(描法)이란 ‘그린 것처럼 긋는 방법’이라고 풀이되며, 프랑스어 Ecriture는 ‘쓰기’란 의미를 지닌다. 제목과 같이 ‘묘법(描法), Ecriture’는 선을 긋는 행위의 결과물이다. 작가에 의하면 연필로 캔버스에 선을 반복적으로 긋는 것으로 시작된 이 작업은 ‘마치 스님의 염불을 끝없이 반복’하는 것과 같이 자신을 비우는 행위라 한다. 이러한 성찰적 행위는 1980년대부터 한지를 재료로 사용하면서부터 더욱 섬세하고 정밀해진다. 젤 메디움(Gel medium) 으로 여러 겹의 한지를 캔버스에 부착하고, 수성 안료로 촉촉하게 만든 후, 굵은 연필 혹은 그의 손가락으로 직접 선을 그어 완성되는 작업은 많은 시간과 과정이 필요로 하는 또 하나의 명상 행위이다.
반세기가 넘도록 하루 평균 14시간 이상 작업을 해온 그에게 이 고요하고 시적인 행위는 치열한 싸움이다. 팔순이 넘은 지금까지도 그가 한국미술의 파워라 불리는 것은 이와 같은 그의 열정과 쉼 없는 도전이 있었기 때문일 것이다. 2010년 12월, 연말을 맞이하여 조현화랑에서 선보이는 박서보의 작품을 통해, 살아 있는 현대미술사라 불리는 박서보의 60년간의 쉼 없던 창착행보의 최근 발자국을 만나 본다.
