Johyun Gallery, Busan, is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Han Soonja, open from March 11 (Wed.) through April 12 (Sun.), 2015. Her colorful, three-dimensional circles, protruding from two-dimensional planes, stimulate viewers’ eyes and curiosity. This exhibition presents Han’s deep, diverse world of infinite circles through digital videos and mobiles installed on the ceiling of the exhibition space.
For Han, circles signify dynamism and vitality, and they are the necessary and sufficient elements that continuously stimulate the game of composition. The circles in her works represent not grand discourse about religion or philosophy, but rather a Korean sentiment, pureness of mind, natural abstract, and innocence of senses. The works lack a depth perspective and expresses diverse arrangements, overlaps, cuttings, and hard edges of shapes and colors. Circles with different centers are stabilized and consolidated around a concentric circle, and later separated and dismantled as freedom and separation coincide. Without any tools, the circles form perfect harmony in free and flexible formations.
In this exhibition, circles with increased diversities are showcased, resulting from the artist’s development from two-dimensional to three-dimensional works. The circles are animated through contraction and expansion, opening and closing, light and color, and they flood the space as planes, sculptures, and installations. Sometimes these circles are planes formed by an infinite number of circles (points), and sometimes they are spheres formed by multiple circles, or inner spaces formed by exterior outlines. At the entrance of the exhibition, distinctly formed circles in multiple colors move in a large, white space, as if rolling. The circular sculptures with diameters of 170 cm and 50 cm are stationed between spaces, demonstrating the free and flexible circles that Han wishes to express. She creates diverse works by using various work methods based on the shapes carved out from or colored on top of her drawings she makes on thin sheets of paper or wood panels. In the exhibition, the viewers will be able to experience the space filled with dynamic movements created by Han’s circles, escaping from pictorial apparatus through her two-dimensional works, sculptures, and installations. Furthermore, the moving circles in a form of digital media will be available not only in the white space but in various other locations through the window media gallery. The window media digital works are specially designed for the duration of this exhibition and will show a new set of circles.
Han has been working in Paris for almost 30 years, and has continued to hold solo exhibitions at a number of critical galleries in Paris. Her earlier works were influenced by abstract expressionism, employing thick matière and passionate gestures. While these works were received by the art market with enthusiasm, she continued to explore and research her painting style. By mid-1990s, she started showing works that were composed of points, lines, and planes, resulting in geometrical figures and simple, colored planes. The organic circular shapes in her earlier works eventually evolved to the current perfect circles. She continues to expand her works into sculpture, space installation, and digital animation, with tireless energy. With experience in diverse media, her works are becoming even more intense, strong, and multi-dimensional.
봄이 시작되는 3월. 조현화랑 부산에서는 2015년 3월 11일(수)부터 4월 12일(일)까지 ‘동그라미 화가 한순자 개인전’을 선보인다. 이 세상의 모든 동그라미들이 형형색색으로 2차원의 평면에서 3차원 입체로 튀어나와 더 많은 호기심과 눈을 자극하게 된다. 이번 전시는 디지털 영상 작업과 전시공간 천장에 설치될 모빌작업을 통해 깊고 다양한 한순자 작가의 무한한 동그라미 세계를 만나볼 수 있다.
작가에게 동그라미란 역동성과 생동감 즉, 어디든지 굴러갈 수 있는 것으로 구성의 묘를 끊임없이 자극하는 아주 필요 충분한 요소이다. 작품 속에 등장하는 동그라미는 종교적이거나 철학적인 원에 대한 거대담론보다는 한국인의 정서가 내면에 담겨있으며, 정신의 순수성과 자연적 추상, 감각의 순수함이 동시에 나타난다. 거리감이나 원근감이 결여되고 형태와 색채의 배열, 중첩, 커팅, 하드에지 등이 다양하게 표현되어 있다. 수많은 중심을 가진 원들이 하나의 동심원의 중심으로 안정되고 통일되며 또 분해 되었다가 해체되기도 하면서 자유와 해체가 동시에 일어나며, 어떤 도구의 도움도 없이 자유롭고 유연한 모습으로 완벽한 조화를 이룬다.
2차원 평면작업에서 3차원 입체 작업으로 발전하여 더 다양해진 원의 모습을 만나 볼 수 있는 이번 전시에서는 제각기 수축과 팽창, 열림과 닫힘 그리고 빛과 색으로 역동성을 가지고 평면에서 조각, 그리고 공간 설치로 동그라미들이 거침없이 움직이고 있다. 이 동그라미들은 무수한 원(점)으로 채워진 평면이기도 하고, 여러 원으로 형성된 부피를 가진 구 이기도 하며, 때로는 밖의 테두리에 의해 생긴 내부의 공간이기도 하다. 전시장 입구에 들어서면 화려한 색색의 동그라미들이 각각의 모습을 하고서 넓은 화이트 공간에 마치 굴러가는 듯 움직이고 있다. 지름이 170cm, 50cm인 동그라미 조각작품들이 공간의 이동마다 설치되어 한순자 작가가 표현하고자 하는 자유롭고 유연한 모습의 동그라미를 온전히 느낄 수 있다. 얇은 종이나 나무 패널에 드로잉을 하고 그 위에 채색하거나 잘라낸 기본 형태를 기준으로 다양하고 새로운 방법으로 여러가지 작업을 한다. 이번 전시를 통하여 평면작업과 조각 설치 작업으로 그림의 틀에서 튀어나온 작가의 동그라미들이 만드는 생동감 넘치는 공간을 경험하게 될 것이다. 또한 디지털 미디어 작품으로 움직이는 동그라미를 윈도우 미디어 갤러리를 통해 화이트 공간에서 뿐 아니라 다양한 곳에서도 볼 수 있다. 이번 전시기간 동안에만 특별히 기획된 윈도우 미디어 디지털 작품은 또 새로운 동그라미들이 보여진다.
한순자 작가는 30여년 가까이 프랑스 파리에서 활동하고 있으며, 1980년대 말부터 파리의 중요한 화랑들에서 개인전을 가지고, 현재까지도 꾸준히 전시를 하고 있는 작가이다. 초기에는 추상표현주의의 영향으로 두꺼운 마티에르와 격정적인 제스츄어로 작업하여 시장의 호응을 얻었으나, 자신의 회화에 대한 끊임없는 탐구와 연구로 1990년대 중반에는 점, 선, 면으로 제한한 기하학적인 도형과 단순한 색면으로 정리한 작업들이 나타나기 시작했다. 초기 회화에서는 유기체적인 원형의 모습이 나타났으나 차츰 완벽한 원형의 동그라미로 자리 잡아 지금의 작품들로 보여지고 있다. 그러나 작가는 이에 안주하지 않고 역동적인 에너지로 평면에서 조각, 공간 설치, 그리고 디지털 애니메이션으로 그 작업 반경을 넓히고 있다. 다양한 매체의 경험으로 더욱 강렬하고 견고하며 다차원적인 작품으로 거듭나고 있다.
