Johyun Gallery, Busan, is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Ken Done, a representative contemporary artist of Australia whose work has become an iconic image of Australia throughout the world. It is the second major solo exhibition of the artist in Korea after thirteen years since his first solo exhibition at Johyun Gallery Busan in 2001. Done’s original paintings and edition works are featured separately in two exhibition sections.
The picturesque house located by the beach, and the nature, the sea and forests near his studio, are the sources of Done’s inspirations. The sea, sky, clouds, fish and the Opera House he daily encounters are the subjects of his work. Vibrant colors and his expressive painting techniques are welcoming and lively. His work echoes the image of Australia and led him to become an artist to represent the country. His own optimistic and easygoing nature is well reflected in his work and is the essence that drives the interests and popularity among the worldwide collectors. Bold colors and images depicting the artist’s daily life allow the viewer to experience the feelings of comfort and ease.
Johyun Gallery, Busan, presents sixteen original paintings representative of the artist, focusing on Done’s recent works, and fourteen prints. His work expresses the beautiful nature of Australia through rich colors. Done’s early series, The Cabin Garden from the 1990s, features his signature style – simplified subjects and raw, vivid colors. His recent works, such as Some flowers for the fruit bowl, Viridian sea garden and Night dive, portrays the stunning nature of Australia in his own colorful ways. Free, rough strokes mixed with bright, complementary hues spark liveliness, and the chromatic feasts reveal the vitality of nature. In particular, the abstractness that highlights colors, which can be evidenced in his recent work, heightens the autonomy of painting. Freely painted like a child’s scribbles, Done’s work overwhelms the audience with its dreamlike ambiance.
Done, who believes that a share of artists’ resourceful senses and expanded areas of art should be used to service the public, embraces his role as a fine artist and involves himself in popularizing art, adopting various approaches to help the audience get closer to his work. 2014년 7월 4일부터 8월 17일까지 조현화랑 부산에서는 호주의 이미지를 전세계로 알린 호주의 대표적인 현대작가 캔 던의 개인전이 열린다. 이번 전시는 2001년 조현화랑 부산에서의 전시 이후 13년 만에 한국에서의 대규모 전시로 원화 작업과 에디션 작업을 두 개의 전시로 나누어 선보인다.
