Johyun Gallery cordially invites you to artist Kim Sungsoo’s solo exhibition, ‘Duplicata’ throughout spring season. Through this exhibition, 32 works from Metallica and Melancholy series are introduced depicting today’s men dryly existing within the cold images of cities.
Kim Sungsoo’s art world is composed of contradicting sentiments between bright and affluent outer world and the emptiness of one’s eyes witnessing it. Louvre’s glass pyramid as its inspiration, Metallica series depicts tangled straight lines of steel frameworks covering the outer part of glass pyramid construction. The inside cannot be seen as much as the outside cannot be seen through windows evenly filled with artificial and strong colors between the steel frames—in other words, the depth of the object cannot be measured. The openness and transparency toward the world in which envisioned through steel frame glass structure by big cities foreshadow discordance between the inner and surface, schism, and gap—today’s society’s true nature of yearning, that is so apparent.
A characteristic in recent Metallica works is the alignment of two works that have been produced as one canvas, composed as one work. Like the word in this exhibition’s title, duplication has expanded the spectacle’s size, applying multiple stares within one exhibition space, and clearly exposes the properties of paradoxes mentioned previously.
, a figure series is an observation made by the artist, of today’s men hidden behind the spectacles and brilliances. Tears dwelling up in the eyes, facial features with almost no shadows, and parted lips exude surreal-like atmosphere in the works in general. These figures’ facial expressions and stares make the audience to concentrate on the ambience exuding from the inner side of the figures rather than to follow the stare from the outside looking at the figures. Special attention is required on the appearance of duplicated two figures on one canvas in the works that are being introduced in this exhibition. Here, the existence of the figure is eliminated completely, emphasizing the anonymity but also dramatically showing the emotion of emptiness; and also observing the correlation between the figures and newly experimented duplication in series will be something to pay attention to.
and series exposing empty stare and fragile appearance with neon-light cities as its background, depict gradually desolating and isolating men’s psychological deficiency and absence, with gloominess following in accordance in contrast to steadily becoming brilliant and corpulent city. It will be an opportunity to recollect upon the society we live in through Kim Sungsoo’s works that capture the surface that is becoming more fancy and complicated by men’s materialistic yearning yet emptiness is added.
조현화랑 부산에서는 2012년 5월 3일부터 6월 10일까지 김성수 개인전 ‘Duplicata’를 선보인다. 이번 전시를 통해 차가운 도시의 이미지와 그 안에서 건조하게 존재하는 현대인들이 묘사된 <메탈리카>, <멜랑콜리>연작 32점을 소개한다.
김성수 작가의 작품세계는 현란하고 풍요로운 외부세계와, 그것을 목도하는 시선의 공허함 사이의 대조가 주된 정서를 이루고 있다. 루브르 박물관의 유리 피라미드를 모티브로 한 <메탈리카>연작은 유리피라미드 건물 외부를 감싸고 있는 철골 구조물의 복잡한 직선들을 묘사한 것이다. 직선들 사이로 인공적이고 강렬한 색채로 균일하게 매워져 있는 유리창들은 내부를 투영할 수도 외부를 바라볼 수도 없는, 다시 말해 어떠한 사물의 깊이도 가늠할 수 없는 상태를 표상한다. 대도시 건축이 철골 유리 구조를 통해서 내세우는 세계를 향한 개방성과 투명성은 작가의 화면에서 현대 사회의 표면화된 욕망의 실체로, 내면과 외면의 불일치, 분열, 괴리를 암시한다.
최근 메탈리카 작업의 특징은 하나의 캔버스로 제작된 그림 두 점을 대칭 배열하여, 하나의 작품으로 구성했다는 점이다. 전시의 제목에도 들어가있듯 복제성(Duplication)을 통해 스펙터클의 규모를 확장시켰고, 하나의 공간에 복수의 시선을 적용시키며, 앞서 언급한 역설의 속성을 더욱 극명하게 드러나고 있다.
인물 연작인 <멜랑콜리>는 스펙터클과 화려함 뒤에 가려진 현대인들에 대한 작가의 관찰이다. 작품 속 눈물이 고여있는 인물들의 눈과 그림자가 거의 없는 이목구비 그리고 갈라진 입술 등은 전체적으로 몽환적인 분위기를 뿜어낸다. 이러한 작품 속 인물들의 표정과 시선은 외부로부터의 시선을 따라 인물을 바라보게 하는 것이 아니라 인물의 내부에서 뿜어져 나오는 모종의 분위기에 몰입하게 한다. 이번 전시에서 소개되는 작품에서 주의 깊게 봐야 할 것은 전시명과 같이 복제된 두 인물이 한 화면에 등장하는 것이다. 이것은 인물의 존재성을 더욱 철저히 제거하고, 익명성을 강조할 뿐만 아니라 공허함의 정서를 더욱 극적으로 보여주고 있다. 이 복제된 인물 그림들이 <메탈리카>연작에서 새롭게 시도한 복제의 개념과 어떤 관계성을 지니고 있는지를 관찰하는 것 또한 이번 전시에서 놓치지 말아야 할 것이다.
형광 빛의 도시를 바탕으로 공허한 시선과 무기력한 모습을 드러내고 있는 <메탈리카>, <멜랑콜리>연작은 점점 화려해지고 비대해져가는 도시의 모습과 그와는 반대로 갈수록 황폐하고, 고립되어 가는 인간 정신의 결핍과 부재, 그에 따른 우울을 그려내고 있다. 인간의 물질적 욕망에 의해 점점 더 화려하고 복잡한 외양을 갖추어 가지만, 그만큼의 공허함도 더해가는 현대 사회의 모습이 담긴 작가의 작품 세계를 통해 우리가 살고 있는 사회의 내면을 되돌아볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다.
