This Spring, Johyun Gallery will be showing Kim Jiwon’s solo show starting on April 22, 2011 until May 22.
Kim, currently a professor in Department of Fine Art at Korea National University of Arts, graduated from Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste (a contemporary fine arts academy) of Frankfurt am Main of Germany. He explores grounds of daily lives, its relationships with society, and origins of painting itself through painting common and simple subjects and ordinary spaces. Especially through his ten-year work, Mendrami (Cockscomes in Korean), he has been gaining attention from Korean art scene. This solo exhibition will show 20 paintings dating from 2005 until 2011 and 18 drawings from his Mendrami series.
Mendrami is a work in which captured artist’s careful observation and passionate life of mendrami that he actually planted in his front yard, also representing the artist’s unique painterly introspection and concentration in painting. Kim ponders upon life and death, desire and irrationality, and isolation and joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure in mendrami that bloom during summer days then vehemently wither after season ends.
‘I’ve been drawing mendrami for a long time. Some people say it is just a flower painting. Some say that it is a portrait of mendrami. One says it has a mixture of both animalistic and plant-like features. I hope for my painting to be read as a revolution, a feeling, a poisonous snake, and a desire in mendrami drawings.’ –Artist’s statement, 2010-
Mendrami’s luscious buds chaotically crowded amongst the weeds come alive, like as if they were organisms, chunks of meat, or even human’s brain or organs. This duplicity character of being both plant and animalistic can be read indifferently through saturated greens and reds and energy transferred through rough brushstrokes in a large canvas. For the artist who explores life’s philosophy within trivial subjects, drawing is a repeated and intense process of introspection beyond painterly reenactment. Finished Mendrami series touch viewers pictorially, being more than just still-life painting, turning itself into artist’s own self-portrait, a man’s portrait of today, or even a psychological landscape painting. In this exhibition, we will meet with painting’s unique charm through mendrami’s passionate life drawn on canvas.

조현화랑은 2011년 4월 22일부터 5월 22일까지 김지원 개인전을 선보인다.
독일 프랑크푸르트 국립조형 미술학교를 졸업하고, 현재 한국예술종합학교 조형예술학과 교수로 재직 중인 중 견 작가 김지원은 흔히 볼 수 있는 소박한 소재와 일상적 공간의 ‘그리기’를 통하여 일상에 대한 사유, 인간과 사회의 관계, 회화 자체의 본질에 대해 탐구해왔다. 특히, 10여 년간 꾸준히 작업해온 맨드라미 정물을 통해 그는 최근 몇 해 전부터 한국 미술계의 주목을 받아왔다. 이번 개인전은 <맨드라미> 연작 중 2005년부터 2011년까지의 회화 작업 23점과 드로잉 18점을 소개한다.
<맨드라미>는 작가의 작업실 앞마당에 직접 심어 기르는 맨드라미를 관찰하며 그 열정적 삶을 담은 작업으로, 작가 특유의 회화적 성찰과 그리기에 대한 치열함을 보여주는 대표작이다. 작가는 한여름 화려하게 부풀어 올랐다가 격렬하게 녹아내리는 맨드라미의 생성과 소멸 속에서 인간의 삶과 죽음, 욕망과 부조리, 고독과 희로애락을 사유한다.
“꽤 오랜 시간 맨드라미를 그렸다. 어떤 사람은 그냥 꽃 그림이라고 했다. 어떤 사람은 맨드라미 초상화라고 했다. 어떤 사람은 동물적이고 식물적인 것이 혼재하는 이중성에 대해서 이야기했다.
나는 맨드라미 그림 속에 혁명하나, 맨드라미 그림 속에 연정하나, 맨드라미 그림 속에 독사 한 마리, 맨드라미 그림 속에 욕망 한 덩어리로 읽혀지길 바란다.”
잡초 속에서 혼란스럽게 군집해 얽혀있는 맨드라미의 탐스러운 꽃봉오리들은 살아 꿈틀거리며 번식하는 유기체, 고깃덩어리 혹은 인간의 뇌나 장기로 느껴진다. 이러한 식물적이면서 동물적인 이중성은 거대한 캔버스 속 거친 붓 터치가 전달하는 역동성과 채도가 낮은 녹색과 붉은색이 가지는 무심함 속에서도 읽힌다. 사소한 대상 속에서 인생철학을 탐색하는 작가에게 그리기란 단순히 대상의 회화적 재현을 넘어 내적 성찰의 치열하고도 지독한 반복의 과정이다. 이러한 과정을 통해 완성된 <맨드라미> 연작은 정물화를 넘어서 작가 자신의 자화상, 오늘날 인간의 초상화, 혹은 심리적 풍경화로 승화되어 보는 이에게 회화적 감동을 선사한다. 이번 전시에서 캔버스 위 맨드라미의 열정적 삶을 통해 회화가 가지는 고유한 매력을 만나본다.
